Real-time Earthquakes

USGS produces a variety of products following significant earthquakes.

Earthquake Scenarios

An earthquake scenario is a planning tool that helps us understand earthquakes and plan for the future. Earthquake Scenarios describe the expected ground motions and effects of specific hypothetical large earthquakes. Scenario earthquakes can be generated for any potential hypothetical future or past historic earthquake for training exercises. Scenarios have been developed for all of the primary faults factored into the USGS National Seismic Hazard Maps; they also have been developed for other structures nationally and globally.

Hazard Maps

USGS conducts seismic hazard assessments for the Nation, and on a case by case basis, for other parts of the world. The maps utilize a number of different primary data sources, including seismicity catalogs, fault databases, and in some cases, geodetic deformation models. These input data sets, along with the resulting hazard models, are available in the Hazards section of the website.
